Wortley
Byers LLP began as Stamp Wortley which was a well established
firm with offices in Brentwood, Chelmsford and Witham.
There were 3 partners – Mr Carroll at Brentwood,
Mr Bailey at Chelmsford and Mr Hawkins at Witham. The
Brentwood Office was then at 2 High Street, Brentwood.
From 1 January 1967, Stamp Wortley amalgamated with another
Brentwood firm called Gerald Byers Lewis & Co. based
at 96 Queens Road. At the same time the firm name was
changed to Wortley Byers & Co. and the practice was
severed from that of Stamp Wortley who continued to practise
at Chelmsford and Witham. Initially, there were 2 partners
– Mr A. R. Carroll (formerly Stamp Wortley) and
Mr J.D. Robertson (formerly Gerald Byers Lewis & Co.).
The practice carried on business from both Brentwood offices.
Then on 15 December 1969, the practice moved into Regency
House, 38 Ingrave Road. Regency House was owned by the
Roman Catholic Church. The freehold was transferred to
Mr Carroll and Mr Robertson in exchange for the freehold
of 96 Queens Road and the surrender to the Church of the
Wortley Byers lease at 2 High Street to enable development
on the 2 High Street site to proceed. Mr Carroll died
at a young age in 1973.
